Afenifere leader Call up Nigerian govt to arrest him over comments on Buhari’s reelection

Chief Ayo Adebanjo, an elderly statesman and leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural group, has challenged the federal government to arrest him for his statement that he would not recognize President Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of the 2019 presidential election until the courts prove it .

Adebanjo, in an interview, described the presidential election of 2019 as a joke, saying he could not recognize Buhar, who was declared the winner of the election, as president-elect.

However, the National Democratic Front (NDF), called for the immediate arrest and appearance of Adebanjo. The group claimed that Adebanjo’s comment amounted to treason and statements capable of plunging the country into another civil war.

In his reaction yesterday, Adebanjo said in a statement that he supported his comment that he would not recognize President Buhari as the winner of the election.

He said he would not be surprised if he was arrested, since Buhari’s administration was known for its lack of tolerance towards the opposition.

He said: “Come and arrest me. I’m used to it. It is typical of their regime that they do not tolerate opposition. It is typical of Buhari in particular, it does not tolerate opposition; so it’s nothing new to me.

“I maintain my position that until the Supreme Court decides that he is validly elected, I will not recognize him.”We have evidence that the election was falsified, that the court decides otherwise. That’s all I’m saying.

“The constitution states that if you are not satisfied with the outcome of the election, go to court and do not resort to violence.

“It’s only when the court decides it won, which is when I will recognize it.” If for them, that’s an offense, then I’m ready to go to jail. By my pronouncement, I have not said anything illegal or unconstitutional.

“At this moment, Buhari is the president declared by the INEC, and not the person who won the elections, and the Constitution says that if you are not satisfied with that statement, go to court.”

“I will only recognize him if the court decides that he is the legitimate winner. “That is my position and if it is a crime to follow what the constitution says, then I am ready to go to jail,” he said ….
